Hello, everyone! It’s the last week of April: the eggs have been hunted, hay fever has struck and spring is truly in full swing. I won’t be sorry to say goodbye to the last of winter—but there’s one thing that I will miss, and that’s Autism Awareness Month. And what a fabulous Autism Awareness Month it’s been! Apart from all the amazing campaigns, initiatives and stories that have been popping up from all sorts of places, House of Silver had the opportunity to launch our own awareness campaign—which went hand in hand with a very special, long-awaited Autism Awareness Jewellery Collection.
But never fear! April may be over, but I certainly hope that we’ve done our little bit towards making every month an autism awareness month. We’ll be keeping our collection up and running for anyone who wants to keep supporting autism awareness, and I thought that I’d do one last awareness giveaway to carry us over into the rest of the year.
Jigsaws have been a symbol for autism for a long time, and in recent years this has drawn some controversy. Many autistic people feel that it has too much baggage—but there are also those who really appreciate what it sets out to celebrate. For them, and for me, the puzzle piece represents interconnectedness, showing that everyone, regardless of individual differences, fits together to make one glorious big picture. So that’s why I’ve picked this Jigsaw Piece Necklace as my last giveaway of the month, and that’s why I want to make it clear that I’m not using it as a symbol for autism, but as a symbol to celebrate individuality and life. Let’s work together to raise awareness that our differences don’t keep us separated but help us join together as one.

I’m not the first person to think this way, and that’s why the jigsaw has been such a widely used symbol in jewellery for so many years. I for one love the fact that this is a symbol with which everybody has their own personal connection, which links them to such a long tradition. What about you? Do you have your own feelings about the jigsaw piece, whether in connection to autism or something else entirely? What does it mean to you? Tell me in the comments!
